Paranormal Activity 2

So - winner or looser?

I was one of the "I LOVE THIS MOVIE" crowd for the first movie, but I had friends who were underwhelmed by the whole thing. I loved the fact that the audience was seriously affected by the movie as a whole. People were in line chattering nervously before the film and lingered long after the film was over, talking in small groups and debriefing instead of leaving. It was almost like no one wanted to go back to their homes afterward.

Films that have this kind of power make me smile. I felt the same way about BLAIR WITCH when it came out. Say what you want about these films, but you can not fight the fact that they made an impact.

Now we have PA2 and I have to say that I get it, but wish it wasn't happening. Will I see it? Most likely. I'm a ghost nut and need to support films like this. However, I would have liked for the efforts to have been directed towards new ground rather than more of the same. We'll see how it does in the box office.

Maelstrom (1985)

I was thinking about this series from the 80s the other day. I watched it - devoured it, really - back in the day on PBS channel 9 and waited as each episode brought me closer and closer to the exciting conclusion and loved every minute of it. I'm not 100% sure it will hold up today, but I'm going to give it a go and see if it does.

I remember it being a ghost story-like mystery. Creepy dolls play a part as well. You can't beat creepy dolls. (Dementia 13 comes to mind....) Classic "who done it" in the cold countrysides of Norway. You may want to save this one for a cold winter night.

I've looked for Maelstrom on DVD, but it doesn't look as if it's available in the US market. I did find it on Amazon UK.

They had it on YouTube, but the person closed their account and now...it's gone yet again. :(

Piranha 3D

"Wait, Doc! You're telling me you built a TIME MACHINE that brought piranha back from the past?"

Wait....wrong movie.

P I R A N H A 3 D : Instructions
1. Gather friends
2. Buy ticket
3. (if you are of age) Have a drink and some food
4. Hit the theater
5. Laugh, cheer, and enjoy the whacked out, 3D goodness of what's bound to be a good "Snakes on a Plane" / "Flight of the Dead" style silly horror fluff fest!!!

Those of you who shun this film should be ashamed. How could you fault lines like, "THE SHERIFF HAS DECLARED AN EMERGENCY! / Don't worry - we've got beer over here! Whoooo!" and "I wanna know what the hell this thing is doing in my lake!"

I even spotted Richard Dreyfus and Eli Roth in the trailer! I love it! Slip into your silly and ENJOY!

Super 8

BEHOLD! Another JJ Abrams mega-smash is slithering it's way into our hearts and minds!

More mystery! More questions! More things to see in the grainy blurs to guess at! I love it.

I believe JJ Abrams could be the William Castle of our day. He has movies that are ok to good, then hypes people into a frenzy about them. I love it. People guess at what is secretly masked within seemingly simple images and phrases. They spread the rumors like a virus and when the movie finally arrives, they flood in to see it without question. Slap Spielberg in there as well and FORGET ABOUT IT! It's chaos!

I'm interested. Are you?

SUPER 8

Green Hornet

While THE GREEN HORNET is not horror, it is fantasy. So, I'm letting it slip in under the wire today. :)

I'm all in. Sign me up for opening day!

Seth Rogen, Cameron Diaz, Jay Chou, Christoph Waltz and Michael Pena star in this remake of the classic. I'm excited to see Waltz ( Inglourious Basterds ) in another role and hope the casting as another villain doesn't ruin things. Seth Rogen could be a fun addition to the classic Hornet lore or he could be....well....Seth Rogen in a green suit. I'm hoping he pulls it off.

The biggest "WHAT?!" comes from hearing who the director is - the one and glorious Michel Gondry!!!

It looks like THE GREEN HORNET could be a fun little hit.

Dead Frontier

These games usually drive me a bit bonkers, but this one looks rather cool. Standard top down/run around play, but with zombies. The running through darkness idea is always creepy to me, but there is something about this one that seems like it might just be cheap scare tactics. Short on story, this shoot'em'up seems like it may be just that - shoot and run around.

N'joy!

Zombina And The Skeletones

ZOMBINA AND THE SKELETONES are fun, kinetic and exciting! I like to think of them as audio coffee. I turn it on and minutes later I'm awake, happy and wanting to dance around like a five year old who was told they can have anything they want at a toy shop eating candy by the fist full!

The band has been playing since 1998 and are still rocking shows across Europe.

Give them a listen - they have MP3's and videos on their site.

Young Werewolves

Are you a rock-a-billy fan? Then you might want to check out this hip trio from Philly. With guitar, bass and stand up drum kit booming, THE YOUNG WEREWOLVES deliver a fun little jump and jive with a jazzy voodoo twist.

Dig it!

SPLICE - Solid A- Grade

I finally made it out to see SPLICE and I wasn't disappointed. Well, not entirely.
At first, I have to admit I was a little let down. For some reason - hype, perhaps - I was expecting something in the JAWS range. Suspense, tension and fear. But SPLICE is a little more fun and bubblegum than that and once I settled into that, I enjoyed the film.
The effects were amazing and had me cooing. My mind swirled around the wild visuals and bio-design and I found it to be a super fun experience. The character design was top notch even though I did wonder at times if this was how a spliced together creature would really look. But, after a heartbeat I realized that this wasn't a Nation Geographic special and needed to be given license to play.
The multiple levels of the film were a lot of fun as well. It's science fiction. It's Frankenstein's monster. It's the work of parenthood and the changes and challenges it brings with it. And it's a lot of fun.
I think the first and second acts are grand, but the third act gets a bit dodgy. I found myself slipping away from the fun world they created with some of the turns Vincenzo Natali had tossed in, but rolled with it enough to be pretty satisfied with the film on the whole. Natali gives us MUCH more story than his previous film CUBE (loved that one) and manages to tell a very engaging tale for the most part.
This really is a science fiction film over horror. While there are horrific happenings and some jump scares, I'd say it was more along the levels of THE FLY sans the extreme body horror elements.
Good times.

The Last Exorcism

I saw the trailer for this ahead of SPLICE and after it was done I looked at my wife and she looked at me and we both KNEW that I was all in on this movie. Will it be the next Exorcist? Doubtful. However, I think it's going to be a shock-filled fun fest.

View the trailer in HD on the Apple Site or in HSD (Horror Show Def) here. :)
