THE BOOGIEMAN: The REAL Ending

The house was a mess, but that wasn’t what came to mind at first glance. There were other things that were far more noticeable.

Like the fact that there was blood everywhere. Blood on the floor, the walls – hell, there was even blood on the ceiling. Bits of gore clung to the curtains in the living room and more covered the walls of the kitchen.

A priest clutching a cross lay dead on the floor. He had three knives, two forks and a cleaver stuck in his back. That brought the body count up to three if you counted the two old folks in the barn – one strangled with a hose and the other pinned by his neck about thirteen feet in the air with a pitchfork.

Sheriff Cooper shoved his hat back on his head and narrowed his eyes. “So, you’re telling me that this was all done by…a ghost?”

“Evil spirit, really. Of my mothers dead lovers.” The dark haired woman sat next to her brother and husband – evidently the last survivors of this attack of evil.

The Sheriff looked over at the two deputies and noted that they were still resting their hands on the butt ends of their guns, then retuned his gaze back to the trio. “So, this ex-lover was killed by your brother?”

“When I was nine.” The blonde man in overalls nodded.

“Riiiight.” Cooper nodded in return. “And, his spirit went into a mirror?”

“I know it sounds crazy, but it’s true, Sir. My wife and her brother were tormented as children, he was tied up by their mother’s lover, my wife cut him free, then her brother used the knife to kill the lover.” He held out his hand. “We went to her old house and that’s when she saw the evil spirit in the mirror. She broke it, I brought it back here, and he came back to life when I pieced the shards back together.” Concern crossed his face.

“And, his spirit was banished when we dropped the mirror into the well.”
Cooper narrowed his eyes. “Where it exploded?”

“Yes, Sir.” The woman stared with teary eyes.

Sheriff Cooper adjusted his hat again. “Ok…let’s get back to Father Mark.” He pointed to the priest on the floor. “The evil spirit did this?”

“Yes, Sir. After Father Mark tried to release it with the cross.”

“And, the evil spirit shoved all those into him?”

“Yes, Sir.”

“I see.” He pursed his lips. “And your ma’ and pa’ in the barn?”

“The spirit did that, too.” The woman started to stand, but Cooper waved her down and she slumped back into her seat. The two deputies slowly slide their half drawn guns back down into their holsters.

“Now, that we dropped the mirror into the well, the evil spirit is gone.” The brother smiled wide. “We’re free of him, see?”

“Sure, son. I see.” Sheriff Cooper smiled and nodded to his deputies. They moved forward and handcuffed the two men as Cooper himself handcuffed the woman.

“You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to have an attorney present during questioning. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you. Do you understand these rights?”

The true ending of the movie THE BOOGIEMAN if it were a real event. In the movie, many people were killed, they get rid of a evil spirit, but I thought, “What about all the dead people? How the HELL did they explain them all away?” Just thought it was funny that they had NO problem dealing with the fact that there were bodies all over the farm they lived on! ☺

BLIGHT - short film

I just had the privilege to see the short film BLIGHT and loved it!

BLIGHT is a terrifying short horror film inspired by the HP Lovecraft story "The Colour Out Of Space". A young police office get more then he bargained for when he visits the home of a reclusive farmer and his family. Starring Jack Parker (Doctor Who) and Adam Basil (Game of Thrones. Made in Conjunction with "The National Film and Television School" and "Neill Gorton Prosthetic Studio".


The film is tight and the effects are fantastic. The actors have a fantastic space to work within - the design is amazing and the minor effects used to situate the location are really well done. The acting is fabulous as well. The period piece works because they kept things very small and contained. Again, fantastic.

Not sure why, but this friggin short short REALLY gave me the creeps. Loved it.
And, loved his VHS2 and ABCs of DEATH work. I need to track down some more Eisner goodness!

So damn creepy. What a great storyteller. Great, "Bava-like" colors as well. Grand!

S-VHS (V/H/S 2)

Sooooo....who else is super excited about S-VHS?!?!?!  Honestly, I was sad about the negatives being bantered around by some about both V/H/S and THE ABCs OF DEATH. Here we finally have some people trying to do something new and interesting in the horror realm and people railed against it.

But, as my wife says, people LOVE to hate things. Especially in this antiseptic, hidden world of the internet. Look at any site where people can put up photos or videos and you'll have a group loving them and another group ripping them apart. I guess that's why we live in America, right? :)

 

ANYWAY, give me more of this goodness any day! It's right up my ally and so much fun to watch.

Well, THE SLEEPOVER is a fantastic short. It's well shot, the acting isn't bad and the story is a lot of fun. My one gripe is that it might have benefited from a little tightening up around the edges, but this is in NO WAY a dig at the overall production. It's fantastic and really dark.

Walking Dead: Webisodes

It seems like THE HORROR SHOW has been doing a little WALKING DEAD bashing of late. Well, that's only because of the disappointment involved in watching the last few seasons of the show. We're sure the feeling of disappointment will pass...if they raise the level of writing....or....we stop watching. :)

With that said, the one WALKING DEAD associated item I was really rather happy about were the WALKING DEAD WEBISODES that were popped up into their webspace months ago. I caught wind of these a while back and watched during a lunch break one afternoon and was pleasantly surprised by them. The writing and production value was great and, honestly, I preferred them to the main show.  (More bashing? Really?)  They were more engaging and involved than the show - especially looking at the last season with the endless farmhouse drama and that HORRID, HORRID LORI WHO IS WORSE THAN ANY ZOMBIE!  :::ahem:::

Uh....oh yeah....


So, the webisodes take a look at  "one of the show's most famous walkers" (I'll stick to what the site states) and are directed by Greg Nicotero. Now, I love me some Greg Nicotero. His effects work is fantastic and he does a grand job directing these shorts. Now, don't get me wrong - we still have some drama and some slower moments here, but the overall flow is far better than the WALKING DEAD series. And, yes, I know that it may be easier dealing with tiny webisode pacing over a whole show. I get that. However, the writing is far more engaging and the world that's created is more fun and feels more...alive (:::giggle:::) than the series world in general.

These are well worth a view. Take a look!

Die Antwoord - Baby's On Fire

Die Antwoord does it again with another extremely twisted video. The worlds they create remind me of the Rob Zombie school - hyper real strangeness turned up to 11. Fascinated, I watched as this cartoon madness spun around in front of me.

Fun, freakish stuff. I approve.

Black Sabbath

This 1963 gem is "trilogy of terror" type film - three stories with a loose (and sometimes rather silly) hosting by Boris Karloff himself. The great Mario Bava (Black Sunday) is credited as Director, but Salvatore Billitteri shares directing credit. While the whole film looks the same artistically for the most part sporting Bava's amazing color pallet, the time periods and quality of story vary greatly.

The first and strongest segment is The Drop of Water and it's by far the most chilling of the three tales. It tells the story of Helen Chester (Jacqueline Pierreux) - a woman tasked with helping prepare the body of a medium for burial in what looks like a time period around the early 1900s. We're told by the servant that the woman must not touch anything in the room because the medium said a horrible curse would befall anyone who did. Heavy handed and clunky, true. Let's move on. :) Of course, the woman sees something she just has to have...and the ensuing nightmare conclusion is friggin' horrid and so damn creepy it gives me chills just thinking about it!  I wish the film ended with this segment - it's the strongest of the three tales and packs the biggest punch. It also plays with shadows and light very well. It has deep, dark areas that push things back while bright and colorful lights illuminate the foreground and add to the nightmare look it has.

The second, more modern segment is called The Telephone and I think I enjoyed it for all the wrong reasons. :::grin:::  I think I got a little caught up with the delicious curves and beauty of Michèle Mercier who plays Rosy in the segment. I kept thinking, "Man...she's really gorgeous" and "Ah, that's when women looked like WOMEN" as I watched her dive deeper and deeper into the terror of...phone calls. Yes, poor Rosy is getting calls from someone who definitely should not be calling her. Disturbing from a stalker standpoint for sure, but the segment pales in comparison to the Drop of Water tale.


The last story is a tale based further back in time again - around the 1800s. We've been shepherded along by Karloff, remember, so the switching of time periods isn't as jarring as it could have been. Plus we have Bava-color to tie everything together nicely. Now we hear about The Wurdalak  - a vampire, basically - and how it has a VERY adverse affect on it's family. Will Sdenka (Susy Andersen) make it to safety with her boyfriend? Maaaaaaybe. We get Karloff being very "Karloff" and a series of passionate deaths, but most of this tale fell flat to me. All but one scene in particular where a family member comes back...walks toward the family home...and calls out...that it's cold. So cold. :::shiver:::  That moment rang through me and was the closest to capturing the chills the first tale had. However, that's where the chills ended for me. The tale even wraps with a strange, comical scene with a horse running away in "comical fast motion" with a wacky, dark musical score. Similar to the "Da da da - da da da - DA!" wrap up, punchline tune used for jokes. Jarring. 

I might have enjoyed this film a bit better if I had not just finished watching a bunch of Hammer films recently. I hold them in high regard and it was hard to see the Bava version of gothic afterward. However it's worth watching - available via Netflix streaming as of the time of this posting. The Drop of Water alone is worth the price of admission! (And, the triple bill of Pierreux, Mercier and Anderson is easy on the eyes!)

I love this. Not only is it top notch storytelling (STORY telling), but it also has some deliciously creepy 3D visuals to back it up. Fantastic.

Thriller

If you're like me, it's been a while since you've seen John Landis' video for Michael Jackson's THRILLER. Yes, John "BLUES BROTHERS•TWILIGHT ZONE•AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON•ANIMAL HOUSE" Landis.

Sadly, Mr. Landis was involved in a horrid accident during the shooting of his portion of THE TWILIGHT ZONE where Vic Morrow and two child extras were killed. He made some choices that lead to the accident and his career and name took a major hit. He's stayed active, but has not been on the course he would have been on.

And, Michael Jackson. Troubled mega-star. A life filled with drama and questions that had a sad and abrupt end.

But...before all that....there was THRILLER.

Man, I remember the premier of the video - on MTV way back when they played videos. That video was talked about all day. "Coming up in three hours! Two hours! ONE HOUR!" We were thrilled, that's for sure. The promise of fantastic effects work by Rick Baker had me drooling!

And when we saw the epic story unfold, we were taken on the wild ride we were promised.

Jackson as a werecat-man-thing. AWESOME!

Dancing around the cute girl when they leave the theater. AWESOME!

Then....BANG! ZOMBIES before zombies were in everything from horror movies to car commercials. And scary zombies that crawled out of graves. Fabulous!

AND THEN THEY ALL DANCE?!?!? HOLY CRAP!!!!!

This video holds up to this day.

Horror Remakes

I was just thinking about horror remakes on my drive in to work today while listening to the DEADPIT RADIO podcast and I wondered how many of these remakes actually make people happy. How many do critics stand up and cheer for? I thought that I was missing something that might explain how these movie remakes keep getting kicked out.

I checked METACRITIC and gathered some data on some of the remakes that have come out of late. Here's what they had.

Perfect score - 100/100
THE FOG - 27/100
FRIDAY THE 13th - 34/100
QUARANTINE ( [rec] remake ) - 53/100
HALLOWEEN - 47/100
HALLOWEEN II - 46/100
FRIGHT NIGHT - 64/100
NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET - 35/100

In some cases, the rate wasn't bad - FRIGHT NIGHT specifically. Honestly, a lot of the people that went to go see it probably were not even born when the original came out. And, I think that's where the studio mindset is. Cash in on a franchise that a whole generation may not have been aware of. However, it doesn't seem to be working. Why are they still doing it?

Quarantine was made in the same year the original film came out. The same year. Rotten Tomatoes gave [rec] 96% fresh and gave Quarantine 59%. However, the Quarantine 2 movie which happens to take the story off in a departure from [rec]2 came in at 83% fresh, at least at the time I'm writing this. Maybe coming up with an original concept here saved the film?

I've railed against remakes before and I'm sure no one is even going to read this, however it just amazes me that this format still gets green lit when original films still come out and have to struggle for a theatrical release.

2009's HOUSE OF THE DEVIL was an amazing film that blew me away. (86% Fresh on RT) It was an homage to films of the 70s and 80s - sure, but it was original.

TUCKER AND DALE v. EVIL (89% Fresh on RT) made me laugh so hard I thought I was going to toss my popcorn! However, it spent a long while floating through festivals and the like and is finally seeing the light of day this October in main theater venues.

But...SAW 39 pops into theaters without and issue.

Odd....odd stuff.

S From Hell

This is a classic. I love it dearly and remember this creepy thing from back in the day. Still gives me the shivers. :)

Linnea Quigley's Horror Workout

Scream Queen Great Linnea Quigley was married to F/X master Steve Johnson for a while - most likely part of the drive to make this goofy thing. :)

Work out with little Linnea and her zombie horde! Or, just sit back and have yourself a good giggle. It's silly, collector fun from the 1990s from an actress that wasn't known for her acting. She's a scream queen through and through and she's good at it. The gags are insane and the effects work is actually better than most zombie horror stuff from today. Good, "dirt style" zombies that look like they clawed their way up from the depths.

You could TRY to find this "gem" on eBay...or just watch a little of this NSFW beauty right here.
