TRIANGLE
Once in a long while, a movie slithers up into view from nowhere and waits patiently for me to find it. Someone will see it – a friend or coworker – and will mention that it's worth a viewing. Like a lightning bolt, the film strikes and knocks you to your butt.
TRIANGLE did that for me. It took me down a path, shook me a bit and then knocked me down. It showed a minute of mercy, picked me up and brushed me off. Then it knocked me down again.
TRIANGLE starts off slow. A woman assures her child that things will be fine. She goes on a boat ride with her friends. They are caught in a storm and the boat capsizes. But wait...a ship...they're saved. The small band of travelers manages to get aboard the large ship as it passes, but things are not all well once they do. There does not seem to be a crew. And, there seems to be someone else aboard.
This is about all I can say about the film without giving key points away. If you're planning to watch this film, I suggest watching without seeing the trailer or doing any sort of info search on it beforehand. Keep it blank and let it wash over you. :)
This film is well written and very well acted. I found myself groaning out loud as the events unfolded. At one point I literally said, “What the hell?! Is there MORE?!” and laughed out loud like a child in a toy store! I loved the twisted ride this movie took me on.
If you love a good story, TRIANGLE is the movie for you.
RIGHT AT YOUR DOOR
Well...file this one under super horror. It's a low budget film that asks the question, "What would you do if something horrid happened, you had to seal the house...and your wife is outside in it?" This movie doesn't have typical "low budget acting" and does not pull any punches. It's a Hitchcock-like, lifeboat tale that had me cringing all the way through. It hits on a few mental panic buttons for me like 9/11 style attacks and loved ones in peril and really had a top notch execution of the subject matter. This wasn't the glossy and special effects heavy 2012 style, but a more down to earth and real style that hit home. It does drag a bit in the middle, but I was ok with that. It was worth it for the fantastic story they presented.
TRAILER: Jonah Hex Trailer is up!
The trailer for Jonah Hex is up and it looks great. As a lover of Steampunk, westerns and the HEX comic, this movie is looking like a must see. The one downside I see to the whole thing is the addition of Megan Fox. I see her as a hazard to any movie if she's doing more than standing around exposing flesh. Acting? Oh lord, no.
That aside, the movie is going to be fun for sure!

NEIGHBOR No.13
Disturbing.
That pretty much sums up this tale of duality from Japan where a nice, quiet neighbor has an extremely dark and violent persona that lives within him. He can't control it and I honestly think he doesn't want to. This persona takes care of him and makes sure he's safe and this story explores what happens to the unfortunate few who get to meet the dark side of NEIGHBOR NUMBER 13.
This is a dark and scary film. No doubt about it. It delivers some shocks and scares and leaves nothing to the usual rules of right and wrong or good and evil. It's a fire that shows no mercy – tearing through whatever gets in it's way. I think that's what I liked most about it. It's somewhat mean, really. It's shot well and has some amazing performances in it.

This is a classic Japanese thriller with some nasty little twists and turns. Fans of the genre will enjoy it immensely. Check it out!

As a horror fan with too many things going on, DREAD CENTRAL keeps me involved in the genre I love when time doesn't allow for me to view the movies themselves. They have a fantastic selection of information and manage to give me MANY avenues to reach it.
The DREAD CENTRAL site has a wide selection of media and articles that talk about the horror genre, upcoming events, and other news related to horror. They host horror clips, trailers and interviews, present press news and media, and present it in a fun way. They truly love the horror genre and everything that goes with it.
When time doesn't allow for website browsing (which is most of the time), the Dread Central Twitter feed allows me to get site updates and news sent directly to me through my Twitter account. I ca scan through their updates and, when one of their posts strikes me as interesting, I can click a direct link that takes me to the area of the site where that item is held. Direct and easy.
I can also get updates and entertainment through their podcasts. HIGHLY entertaining and fun. The Dread Central crew meets and discusses industry events and news with an energy and vibe that I love. This isn't a pompous, “we know more than you” podcast. It's a group of friends talking over what's going on and having a hell of a lot of fun doing it.
Horror fans need to have all these items at their fingertips at all times – it's a must for horror fans and loads of fun.

HOUSE OF THE DEVIL
This movie has been bantered about as the new Rosemary's Baby for our set. A masterwork of of horror. Amazing...shocking...mind blowing...
Yeah.
I wanted to see this film before the hype smashed it into oblivion and before any spoilers ruined whatever surprises the movie might be able to deliver. Well worth a viewing, HOUSE OF THE DEVIL does provide a fun experience for horror lovers.
HOUSE is set in the 80s and has an 80s look and feel that is truly amazing without being too gimic ridden. If no one told me it was a new film, I'd assume it was an 80s film. The pace of the story is slow and methodical and building. It crawls, then walks, then runs like a cheetah towards the end. They even manage to slip in a lovely 80s montage scene to the tune of One Thing Leads to Another by The Fixx that worked like a charm!
The micro cast turns in a grand set of performances that really solidifies the story. The director – Ti West – works with a lock down camera from time to time and just lets the tension build to terrible heights without resorting to silly shocks and scares. What's not seen adds as much if not more to the tension created by what you see. It does not force feed the view shocks.
The resolution worked and I remember nodding and smiling – seeing that the film did push some good buttons. As I sat with the film, it went from a B+ to a solid A as some of the scenes and story twists settled in and made me wince a little.
A solid and fun scare fest that doesn't hit today's “torture fest”, dumb terror.

FICTION: Dead Things- End of her Rope (Revised)
End of her rope. The end. The ropes end. The end of it. Smoking gun. Caught with the smoking gun. Pain in the neck. Time. End of. End of my rope.
Her eyes fluttered open and she tried to focus them in the darkness, but they didn't cooperate. She felt something around her throat and reached up with a shaky hand to investigate. Rope. The rope bit into the pink flesh of her neck and burned with the slightest of movements. It took her a minute to regain what little control she had. First, she felt the cold wood on her cheek and realized that it was floor and not wall since she was laying on it. Her neck and ribs ached fiercely. Her back felt twisted, but she could move her legs. Something bumped in the hallway and she tried to call out for assistance, but her throat was constricted and pain shot through her when she tried to speak. Everything smelled stale and medicinal.
What the hell had happened? She blinked and tried to sit up. The rope was caught under her arm and pulled at her burnt skin when she pushed up. She winced and yanked it from under her arm and shoved – bringing herself to a seated position. She then assessed the situation.
Rope. Broken pipe above her on the ceiling. Gun on the floor before her, smoking. Her left shoulder hurt almost as bad as her throat. She touched the burnt skin around her neck and glanced up to the broken set of pipes. Had she tried to kill herself? It seemed impossible, yet there she was. But, the gun didn’t make sense. Maybe someone had tried to kill her? Hang her? And she shot them?
“What…” she clamped her eyes shut as the sting from her throat ran down her spine. No talking for now. She tasted blood and licked her lip. It was split and blood ran from it into her mouth.
She blinked hard and slowly removed the rope from her neck. Pain made her wince as she tossed the rope aside. Her whole body ached.
The noise in the hall came again and the situation made her heart beat faster. If this person in the hall had tried to kill her and she had indeed shot them, she’d have to seek help and fast. She narrowed her eyes when she heard footsteps. Obviously, someone was still very much alive.
