DIE ANTWOORD (Afrikaans for THE ANSWER) is one of the most fun and freaky bands I've seen. I guess I'd toss them into the same realm as MY LIFE WITH THE THRILL KILL KULT (back when they were more evil and slick) and GWAR just due to the performance style they have. Wild, insane outfits, shocking visuals and a hyper-kinetic pace make these guys a fun and freaky addition to your collection.

Their whole...thing...reminds me of the TANK GIRL (Jamie Hewlett and Alan Martin).

They have that same, messy chic thing going on.

I hesitate to do TOO much digging when looking for information on Die Antwoord. I guess I just don't want to find out something that will make it impossible to listen to them anymore. Like, "They just love baby bacon," or something like that. So...I'll listen to them for small periods of time and enjoy the madness.

MADHOUSE

I finally made time to see the 1974 classic MADHOUSE recently. I tossed it one while working on a project thinking that it was going to be some fluffy, empty horror comedy. I'm not sure where I got that idea - it was far from comedy.

In this tale, we meet Paul Toombes (Vincent Price) - the actor behind the famous movie madman Dr. Death. Toombes created the character with his dear friend Herbert Flay (Peter Cushing) and movie after movie was made. However, after tragedy strikes Toombes, we're not sure if Dr. Death will return.

Enough said about the plot. We have PRICE and CUSHING together here! It's a fantastic pairing. Like wine and cheese or cookies and ice cream! :) The performances are fantastic and well worth a watch. The 70s film making could be tough for those who love today's BOURNE bouncing camera and rocket edits, but the charm and grace of this film made it for me. What we really have here is a who-done-it in a classic giallo style. We know something is amiss, but we're not sure what it is exactly.

The film does run off the rails a bit at the end. I found myself blinking at the screen and wondering what it was I just saw. However, I was so invested in the film and it's characters that this small plot swerve merely got a raised eyebrow and a audible "Huh?" out of me before I slipped right back into it's delicious, Hammer Horror-style glory.

If you're a Price fan, you'll love the use of many of his previous films as the films of Dr. Death. FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER, THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM and clips from many more Price classics are shown and it turns into a lovely homage to Price and his work.

The film is also Directed by Jim Clark. While this seems to be his biggest Director outing, he's been an editor on some major titles - The World is Not Enough, Marathon Man, Charade and The Killing Fields just to name a few. Nothing to shake a stick at, as they say.

All in all, you can't go wrong with MADHOUSE. Put it on one dark and rainy night, pour yourself a glass of wine, sit back and enjoy!

The Cottage

Andy Serkis (Golum "LORD OF THE RINGS") stars in this strange, sick little horror comedy from 2008 about a simple kidnapping gone wrong and a bad man doing some bad things around...a cottage.

Written and Directed by Paul Andrew Williams who also wrote THE CHILDREN (2008).

Fun, fluffy little film with some really nasty bits. This one is well worth a rental or stream over a pint with some friends. :)

Ok...I'm going to say it.

“Modern day Norman Bates-like nutter” movie.

Joel Moore plays the disturbed Mason. He has some real issues. Nuff said.
Adam Green has a certain flair for the...well...frucked up! He knows how to make horror. He know how to shoot it and Joel Moore knows how to help write and direct as well. The film has a somewhat low budget feel, but was fun and creepy to watch. One of those films that you giggle at because it's smart.

No, there are no traps.
No torture.
No wicked villains with master plans or scary foreigners out to get ya.

These people are people you work with. People you know. (Hell, YOU may even BE one of them yourself!) That's what brings the horror home.
Check this film out. You'll dig it, I think.

Samurai Princess

Ah...Samurai Princess.

No need to dwell on this TOO much.

Basically, we can laundry list this 2009 oddness by saying that it deals with the creation of cybrg-like humans, is packed with blood spraying, tongue wiggling, overacting, crimes against women, body parts laying around in piles, AWESOME dubbing (horrid), and has a foot tossed at a nun who starts preaching...which was rather funny.

And, WHEN the hell is this supposed to be happening time wise?? They are like strange, harajuku people in some strange, alternate universe. The clothing is bizarre. But...I kinda liked it.

For a movie staring a porn starlet Yû Aiba , there is little nekkidness. Though, there is a silly love making scene in the middle.

Daemonium

DAEMONIUM is a web series short format film - a science fiction/horror blend out of Argentina from Director Pablo Pares and Producer Simon Ratziel.

The film is in five parts and tells the story of a dystopian, alternate universe packed with demons of both the monster and human variety.

Episode One has some fun elements in it for sure. Cool costumes, cute Argentine ladies and a grand assortment of demons looking to cause trouble. A girl dressed in a schoolgirl outfit (ok, a bit played out, but...you know...you still like it...) wanders into a bio-hazard warehouse area. She slinks through the environment and sucks on a sucker. Enter demons. Enter action.

I know. I know. But hey, it's still good stuff once the butt kicking starts. :)

There's a nice mix of CG effects and practical effects as well. They are blended into a cool, comic style that will appeal to fans of films like SUCKER PUNCH or SKY CAPTAIN.

I'm all in - bring on the next four episodes!

Of course, I've never been interviewed on anything, so....He said he hired people from the Academy of Art to do the 3D. Resounding bonus advert for the Academy, I'm sure. BIRDEMIC: SHOCK AND TERROR is...unique. Wild. Interview with the director James Nguyen on THIS WEEK IN HORROR. He's amazing.

Cabin in the Woods

I love this. Joss Whedon gives us more, unique goodness with CABIN IN THE WOODS. The tag is "You think you know the story, but you're wrong." or something to that effect and it seems like that is so true it hurts. Whedon seems to be taking a plunge into the meta - calling out typical horror movie stereotypes and turning them on angle like the creators of TUCKER AND DALE V. EVIL did.

Forget Me Not

Well well well...color me surprised.

Most of the time I try to ignore these more mainstream, teen horror movies. However, while the film is somewhat predictable and seems like it's freely borrowing from Asian cinema, FORGET ME NOT has a plot that I really liked, so I forgave much of it.

I don't want to say too much about the plot for fear of giving something away. Suffice it to say that it's a supernatural horror of the teen variety. A band of "teens" (they all look like they are in their late 20s, of course) are graduating. We have all varieties represented - again, standard fair. The jock, the slut, the bitch, the brain, etc. However, the group seems like it may have actually been a real group. While they vary, they seem like they might actually hang out in the same space. There are no "people of color" here, which, as a person of color myself, I found interesting. Usually a casting director will insist on tossing in an Asian or black character just to keep things "well blended".

We have a "Set 'em Up and Knock 'em Down" plot, but the plot is actually interesting enough to have held my interest for the 90 plus minute run time. And, as the plot drives along, I actually found myself being more and more interested in just how the story would play out - not just starring at the time waiting for it to resolve so I could be done with it and move on.

The execution is...well...fine. It's obvious that Asian horror is being copied. Scary things happen by scary creatures that jerk around and open computer-augmented mouths too wide as they roar. Ok...it's kinda creepy...sure. If I go through the process of "Whoa...what would I do if I was there and saw that?", then it's even more effective. Right when I started to get a bit bored with things, the plot ramped into play yet again and I was back into the film.

Tyler Oliver wrote and directed the film. This can go either way as well. Sometimes this is a fantastic combo and sometimes the precious baby of the writer really needs a trimming and molding by a new person. The writer/director combo works well here, however.

All in all, FORGET ME NOT was worth the time investment. If you're a fan of the FINAL DESTINATION franchise or like the shocks films like JU-ON or RINGU provide, give this film a whirl. And, if you like plot lines found in TALES FROM THE CRYPT, THE NIGHT GALLERY or TWILIGHT ZONE, check this out as well. It's also perfect for the "work and watch" set - people who like to watch a movie as they work or clean. You have it on and look up when the screaming starts.

THE INTRUDERS is being held up as a better INSIDIOUS and those are high marks to hit. Insidious took the country be surprise and scooped up a lot of cash as this sort of sleeper hit - a mainstream ghost story with some creepy scenes, good writing and a few good shocks.

In The Intruders, we see some of the same plot lines come through. Kids being stalked by Boogie Man like entity. Scary bumps in the night. Parents trying to sort it out. On paper, it's the same damn movie. So, what will it offer it's audience as differentiators? There needs to be something more than just having TWO kids in TWO different places. And, what's this secret they need to sort out.

Yes, you guest it - I'll be watching this film.

The Awakening

More fun ghost goings on in the BBC production THE AWAKENING. Another TIFF 11 special and one I'm excited to see.

This film reminds me of THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE. A lot, actually.

A female ghost hunter (interesting twist) goes in search of ghost to debunk them, but a boys school might have her believing in ghosts by the time she's through.

The film stars Rebecca Hall (Vicky Cristina Barcelona), Dominic West (The Wire) and Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter), so there should be some fine acting to carry the story forward, but I hear that there might be a "standard course" set in the storytelling, so ghost movie fans might be able to see the end coming. The gothic gloom has me wanting to see it at once.

The Incident

And so we have THE INCIDENT (notably called "PARANORMAL INCIDENT" in the trailer below) about a group of folks who spend the night in an insane asylum. You may think you've seen this movie or plot before. Don't worry, it's only because you have. About 1389 times. :)But, of course, I'll still seek it out and see it even if it's only on Netflix streaming. It looks amusing.

The Innkeepers

New nugget from Ti West, the Director of the amazing HOUSE OF THE DEVIL.

THE INNKEEPERS looks like it's going to be a fun little ghost tale. I hope he can keep up the energy and suspense that House of the Devil had. Unlike HOUSE, however, this looks like it's rather F/X heavy. Has Hollywood tossed too much money at Mr. West? That tends to happen when you make your first mega hit.

"Here! Here's MORE MONEY! You can make an even BETTER movie with MORE MONEY, right?"

Not always the case. As a matter of fact, I think many more interesting films are made with LESS money because it forces the movie makers - good ones, at least - to focus on story, pace and execution instead of just swirling some computer madness around for 90 minutes.

Fingers crossed Ti keeps hits wits about him...

Due to be released February 3rd, 2012 - just in time for my birthday! Or, for those who can't wait, the film will be available ON DEMAND on December 30th, 2011.

Lust For A Vampire

Well...LUST FOR A VAMPIRE was my least favorite in the Hammer Karnstein Trilogy. I won't take much time with it.

It's plot is a bit messy. Carmilla Karnstein is basically hanging out at a girls school and running through the ladies like a hungry man at a sushi boat restaurant. One man pines away for her love while the other pines away for being a vampire himself.

Girls go missing, man go missing, and cover up operations abound, but I found that I didn't really care about anyone in the film much.

Yutte Stensgaard tosses her Denmark blonde hat onto the Hammer Glamor list and doesn't seem to have a problem baring her...soul...for the role.

Ralph Bates does well as the driven school teacher who wants to be a vampire and the wooden performance of Michael Johnson is fun to watch as he bumbles about. But, the real awesomeness of the film comes from Mike Raven doing his best Christopher Lee impersonation. His booming voice and over the top "I'm a bad man" presence is a joy to watch. It's fun stuff.

Watch LUST for the trilogy aspect, but feel free to do something else while it's playing in the background. :)

Twins of Evil

The HAMMER FEST continues with TWINS OF EVIL from 1971.

Here we have the return of the Karnsteins in the final film of the Karnstein trilogy...of evil. Frieda and Maria Gellhorn - adorable twins - come from Vienna to stay with their uncle Gustav (The most awesome Peter Cushing) after their parents pass away. They are proper young ladies, but not proper enough for their witch burning, bible loving Uncle - the leader of THE BROTHERHOOD of witch hunters. And we soon find out that the young twins have very different personalities, too. One is good...and the other has the touch of evil. This makes her most desirable to Count Karnstein, especially after he gives his soul to the devil and becomes a vampire. Can Gustav and the townspeople reach the Count before he and the wicked Frieda escape?

This film is in line with the others in the trilogy. I'd say this is my second fave of the three behind THE VAMPIRE LOVERS and before LUST FOR A VAMPIRE. We hear about Mircalla Karnstein (I believe she even makes an appearance) and the Karnstein line and their wicked deeds. We see the Karnstein devil influences. All in all, it's an enjoyable addition.

We get the usual Hammer cleavage as well, but it pales compared to THE VAMPIRE LOVERS. The Collinson twins are very cute and work well as the films leads. They don't have the same presence as Ingrid Pitt or Yutte Stensgaard, however, but it is hard to keep that level of screen presence. Especially casting true twins.

The film has some nice gimmics in it. When Karnstein signs his soul away, he can not be seen in mirrors. They did a simple trick where the mirror was taken out and a duplicate of the room was created so that it looked like there was no reflection. Simple, but effective. There were several "witch burning" scenes with the classic "fire in front of the camera" routine. Again, effective. This was another almost bloodless vampire film. When someone is bitten, small dribbles of blood are shown on the neck. It was truly a more simple time when it came to horror.

The story is simple, but the real fun comes from the relationships between characters - one of my favorite parts of Hammer films. I don't watch them for the "horror" (they are really tame) , but LOVE their character interactions. TWINS has some fantastic interplay.

Cushing as Gustav Weil is not a nice guy here. He's horrid, driven and blind to anything but leading the Brotherhood in their witch hunt. He hunts down and burns several women in his hunt for evil with no trial or mercy all in the name of good. Karnstein is his main enemy even before he's changed. He represents the impure nature of man - full of lust and impropriety. Karnstein, in turn, loves provoking Gustav because he has political ties that prevent Gustav from doing anything to him. Very handy especially after he's made into a vampire.

The twins run the same - Frieda wanting to escape the tyrannical uncle and Maria wanting to remain the good girl. They love each other, but there is a great tension between them as well. Maria is so kind that she even pretends to be her sister when her uncle checks in on them so her sister won't get into trouble.

There's also a rather forgettable love interest in the story, but the only thing I liked about him was a scene where he thinks about launching a spear into the chest of Count Karnstein even though he happens to be holding Maria in his arms...at chest level...up on the second floor. A villager stops him and says, "You can't! You might hit Maria!" and the love interest lowers the spear with a "Oh yeah, I guess you're right" look on his face. Comical.

TWINS OF EVIL is a fun little gothic horror drama and is well worth checking out.

80s Video Night

It's Friday in the 80s and you and your horror fan friends are planning on running out directly after school, hitting the video rental store, stopping by the Safeway to pick up sodas and snacks, then going to the designated home of the eve to watch movies all night until sunrise.

Ah...those were the days! :)

I re-watched THE VIDEO DEAD recently and, I have to say, it's still a guilty pleasure of mine. Silly fun.What were some of your faves as a teen? Have you seen them recently? Still like them?

Black Sabbath

This 1963 gem is "trilogy of terror" type film - three stories with a loose (and sometimes rather silly) hosting by Boris Karloff himself. The great Mario Bava (Black Sunday) is credited as Director, but Salvatore Billitteri shares directing credit. While the whole film looks the same artistically for the most part sporting Bava's amazing color pallet, the time periods and quality of story vary greatly.

The first and strongest segment is The Drop of Water and it's by far the most chilling of the three tales. It tells the story of Helen Chester (Jacqueline Pierreux) - a woman tasked with helping prepare the body of a medium for burial in what looks like a time period around the early 1900s. We're told by the servant that the woman must not touch anything in the room because the medium said a horrible curse would befall anyone who did. Heavy handed and clunky, true. Let's move on. :) Of course, the woman sees something she just has to have...and the ensuing nightmare conclusion is friggin' horrid and so damn creepy it gives me chills just thinking about it! I wish the film ended with this segment - it's the strongest of the three tales and packs the biggest punch. It also plays with shadows and light very well. It has deep, dark areas that push things back while bright and colorful lights illuminate the foreground and add to the nightmare look it has.

The second, more modern segment is called The Telephone and I think I enjoyed it for all the wrong reasons. :::grin::: I think I got a little caught up with the delicious curves and beauty of Michèle Mercier who plays Rosy in the segment. I kept thinking, "Man...she's really gorgeous" and "Ah, that's when women looked like WOMEN" as I watched her dive deeper and deeper into the terror of...phone calls. Yes, poor Rosy is getting calls from someone who definitely should not be calling her. Disturbing from a stalker standpoint for sure, but the segment pales in comparison to the Drop of Water tale.

The last story is a tale based further back in time again - around the 1800s. We've been shepherded along by Karloff, remember, so the switching of time periods isn't as jarring as it could have been. Plus we have Bava-color to tie everything together nicely. Now we hear about The Wurdalak - a vampire, basically - and how it has a VERY adverse affect on it's family. Will Sdenka (Susy Andersen) make it to safety with her boyfriend? Maaaaaaybe. We get Karloff being very "Karloff" and a series of passionate deaths, but most of this tale fell flat to me. All but one scene in particular where a family member comes back...walks toward the family home...and calls out...that it's cold. So cold. :::shiver::: That moment rang through me and was the closest to capturing the chills the first tale had. However, that's where the chills ended for me. The tale even wraps with a strange, comical scene with a horse running away in "comical fast motion" with a wacky, dark musical score. Similar to the "Da da da - da da da - DA!" wrap up, punchline tune used for jokes. Jarring.

I might have enjoyed this film a bit better if I had not just finished watching a bunch of Hammer films recently. I hold them in high regard and it was hard to see the Bava version of gothic afterward. However it's worth watching - available via Netflix streaming as of the time of this posting. The Drop of Water alone is worth the price of admission! (And, the triple bill of Pierreux, Mercier and Anderson is easy on the eyes!)

You Belong to Me

One of my favorite movies is GHOST STORY. (Sadly, I tried to read the book and didn't like it as much as the movie....)

My wife was listening to the song "You Belong To Me" and a shiver ran down my spine. It's kinda creepy if you listen to the lyrics. Especially when it's sung by Patience & Prudence.

So, why not combine the creepy song and some creepy GHOST STORY visuals? :)

95% of the human genome is composed of redundant gene sequences. They appear to have no known biological function. Could a chance event reactivate them? Genetic freaks wander the streets courtesy of irresponsible pharmaceutical companies.

I love this. Not only is it top notch storytelling (STORY telling), but it also has some deliciously creepy 3D visuals to back it up. Fantastic.

Helldriver

The great and powerful Yoshihiro Nishimura (involved in various ways in TOKYO GORE POLICE, MACHINE GIRL, SUICIDE CLUB, VAMPIRE GIRL v. FRANKENSTEIN GIRL) is back with more gore madness - HELLDRIVER.

These films make me happy. They are pure stupidity on some levels, but also a lot of fun and hyper-kinetic on dangerous levels. There are times I think they might give me a seizure or some other sort of brain damage. But, the gore and over the top, comic style is very enjoyable. If you're into that sort of thing.

And "That Sort of Thing is what it really boils down to. I've seen movies like MACHINE GIRL in a theater with people howling, screaming and laughing all the way through, then clapping wildly at the end. It's a lot like being on a roller coaster. You know that you're basically going to be doing the same things - up up up, screaming down into a series of flips and turns and curves, then peacefully back into the station to continue your day. You are not disappointed when that's all you get. Unless you're 5 years old or something.

These films basically tell you "So, we're going to have nudity, blood spraying all over the place, insane action, even more insane weapons, head and limb chopping and various other items that will have you whispering What the HELL was that?!"

I'm all in. :)

Vampire Lovers

THE VAMPIRE LOVERS (1970) is a fantastic film.

Don't get me wrong, it's a film made in the 70s, so it has 70s pacing and 70s acting, but there's a charm in that. A charm that works so very well with the gothic vampire theme. Ideal for a cold winter night.

Ingrid Pitt the lead in the film - the mysterious Marcilla. But, is she who she says she is? She slips into the homes of families as an invited guest and the beautiful daughters of the homes start dying. Slowly.

Now, there is really nothing to spoil here - it's a vampire story. So, there are vampires. The story itself is classic. Vampire anemia making young girls waste away while strapping young men and noble older men try to find the vampire or vampires and do away with them before the young innocent dies. The Hammer Studios stamp is all over this film. Fantastic, gothic sets with fog and candles all around. Men ride horses through forests while lovely ladies with cleavage abound. It's lovely.

The film poster above is not for the film I saw. This poster would have you believe there are women ravaging men in chains. "Not for the mentally immature." Hilarious. In truth, this film has more of a lesbian twist. Pitt makes the young, sweet ladies swoon as she drains them of their life essence. And man, it has scenes of smoldering passion, that's for sure. (Again, 1970s style) NETFLIX even has it with a Gay and Lesbian tag. Whatever it is, it's sexually charged and fun to watch.

The pace will through a few people off, I'm sure. The story itself is sound and moves along like you're reading a novel. However, people with modern day pacing sensibilities will hate this film, I believe, kicking their feet and clawing the arms of their chairs as they wait for a car chase or explosion. Even the "gore" - little as there is - is far more tame than today's films. (I just saw PIRANHA and the first 10 minutes was more gore filled than Vampire Lovers.)

If you need another reason to watch this film, it's Peter Cushing. While he doesn't have a lot of screen time, the time he does occupy is golden as usual. He is serious as ever and his performance is top notch.

There's another character that I wasn't 100% sure about. If someone knows who he is, please let us know in the comments below! He's a vampire who is in on the charade of Pitt and who seems to be the leader of the vampire house guest plan, yet the story never says who he is or who he could be. I read that this film is part of a Karnstein Vampire Trilogy: VAMPIRE LOVERS, LUST FOR A VAMPIRE and TWINS OF EVIL. I'll have to see if the character reappears in those films. They are on my list.

So, if you're a fan of the fantastic HAMMER HORROR films of the 70s and have somehow missed this film, check it out and play along with the Karnstein Vampire Trilogy! If it's been a while since you've seen the film and remember liking it, revisit it and let us know if you still approve.

Woman in Black

HAMMER HORROR returns yet again with THE WOMAN IN BLACK!

The engaging WAKE WOOD was a fine return for HAMMER and I hope The Woman in Black finds a hold and manages to be even better. I think the biggest hurdle for the film is Daniel "Harry Potter" Radcliffe in the starring role. Depending on the rating, it could help the movie - sending flocks of teen girls swooning towards the theaters. However, it can also send horror fans screaming away from the theater and away from Potter.

I'm looking forward to the film, personally. It looks like a great horror ghost story.

ThisIs looking fantastic. Can't really go wrong with the troop that made CORALINE. What a fun look and feel! I dig it. According to IMDB, A misunderstood boy who can speak with the dead, takes on ghosts, zombies and grown-ups to save his town from a centuries-old curse.It's nice to see some more original items coming out of this studio. In 2005, Laika Entertainment came out with CORPSE BRIDE. While it was filled with buzz thanks to Johnny Depp and Tim Burton, I'm not sure it was a huge hit. Moongirl and Slacker Cats followed. Yeah, I didn't hear about those either. :) Coraline was amazing, I hope ParaNorman follows it's lead.

It has a great look. The lighting and character designs are grand.
I can't wait!

So, I finally got around to seeing PIRANHA today. I had planned to see it in the theater when it came out after I heard a lot of good things about it post-production 3D and action, however life with a new baby doesn't always allow for such luxuries. So...DVD it was.

My review: HOLY CRAP! I LOVE THIS FILM!

They managed to get the "old timey" feel of 80s gore cinema while keeping today's pacing and sense of action. They got Greg "The F/X God" Nicotero to do the effects work. And, they got a director (Alex Aja) who not only knows how to direct, but who also takes the time he needs to make a good film. This includes the monster task of casting for leads AND extras as well as making sure the best of the best were involved in the films production. The resulting shockrific, monster gore fest was so much fun I found myself bouncing on the couch and giggling from time to time and I clapped at the end of the film.

I admit it - I clapped. Alone. In my living room. I even nodded and muttered, "Nice work." (Nerd)

I won't say much more about the plot than Piranhas on the loose in a lake at Spring Break. No more really needs to be said. The beauties dance on party boats and do the usual Spring Break madness. Aja doesn't shy away from nudity or bikinis like many other 80s style remakes have done recently. I mean, that was the 80s. Skin was in and part of the chemistry of an 80s horror film. So, if you're not a fan of girls in bikinis, don't bother with this film.

The acting is fantastic. Everyone does what they are supposed to do. Ving Rhames, Elisabeth Shue and Steven "Grandson of" McQueen all turn in fine performances. The top shelf folks like Christopher Lloyd and Richard Dreyfuss even treat this like real work, not some toss away favor. Eli Roth even stretches his acting chops to play a wet t-shirt douche bag. (Did you know he KNOWS Quentin and Brad. You know...from when he was in Inglourious Basterds. Sorry...he mentions this ALL the time and had to do it again in the films extras. :) ) The casting of extras (not an open cattle call, but one-to-one, face-to-face casting) REALLY made a huge difference. Everyone on camera is acting and taking things seriously and it shows.

But the real star of this film is the gore. DEAR LAWD! there is a LOT of gore in this film. And the visceral, nasty kind, too. All in the daylight and in your face. The F/X in this film are so much fun. They are a real throwback to old school gore-fests. No punches are pulled and there are some creative and wicked scenes - especially in the "ATTACK THE LAKE" madness that ramps the blood and guts up to 13! Some of the best I've seen in a long time. And...so much of it!

I think I've gushed over this film enough. If you have not seen it, do so at once. I regret not seeing this in a theater - 3D aside. It would have been fun to see this in a packed theater with a crowd of cringing, whooping fans. Check it!

Hammer Horror: Sexy Vampires

I've been on a Hammer Horror trip of late. Hammer represents some of my first outings in horror. When I was a boy, I used to watch them on Saturdays with a giant bowl of popcorn (thanks, Mom!) and just eat up every aspect of them. The Gothic nature of the stories and scenery had a strong effect on me.

Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee were fantastic leads in the Hammer World, but the women in the movies were just delicious. The studio presented a bevy of beauties who ran the range from innocent to evil. I have a memory burned into my brain of watching TWINS OF EVIL on Creature Features (R.I.P. Bob Wilkins!) and someone had forgotten to cut or crop a breast out. There on my TV...was a breast. It hovered there softly and my young brain swooned. :) And strong female leads like Ingrid Pitt were fantastic to see on screen.

The Hammer Glamour [Book] by Marcus Hearn came out recently and the fun 1951 Down Place Podcast has been rekindling my desire to see some of these awesome Hammer Horror films again. The cold weather and the winter darkness make it a perfect Hammer viewing time. I figured that I'd jump into the marathon with the sexy Hammer Vampires. (Of course!)

Man...they don't make them like Ingrid Pitt anymore. Sure, we have various "haut" actresses hanging about, but they just don't have the charisma of Pitt.

The Hammer Movie Queen is featured in the classic Countess Dracula from 1971. The Countess needs blood to stay young. And, blood she shall have!

I'm glad Hammer is back, but I'm just not sure they will ever regain what they had in the 70's. Their films were so basic and gothic and...slow. I loved the slowness, however. They are just fun films.

UPDATE after seeing it again:

I think this might be one of the weakest of the Hammer vamp movies. Oh, it's still fun and still gothic, but I think it really should have been called COUNTESS BATHORY or something to that effect. They slip in some villagers calling Pitt Countess Dracula at the end, but that's really the only spot the name comes up. She's not really a vampire, she just uses blood to keep herself young.

That being said, it's a fun film with some grand, over the top performances. Pitt is evil, however. She's self possessed and doesn't care about anyone except herself and her new lover.

It's well worth watching. Just don't expect a be-fanged Pitt hissing around the place. :)

The Asphyx (1973) is a film that has a fantastic storyline, but lacked budget and tech to really make it what it could have been. I HATE remakes, but I'd actually love to see this film remade properly with a good budget and A List F/X team. If you have not seen it, you might want to check it out.

The story involves capturing the spirit as it leaves the body when death occurs. Scientists manage to successfully capture the soul, but the results are less that pleasant.

Loosely based on the Island of Doctor Moreau - 1896 science fiction novel written by H. G. Wells - this old classic was filmed in the Philippines on the cheap, but it looks like a ton of fun.

TERROR was featured in Machete Maidens Unleashed! and looks like it was put together well. It also had a great gimmic where a bell would sound to warm people so they could avert their gaze for particularly gruesome scenes. Ah, I miss the days of fun gimmicks and awesome FILMED IN SCARE-O-VISION-like tags. People like William Castle were masters at that sort of thing. We just don't have that today.

And, we don't have films like TERROR IS A MAN. Gorilla style films shot quickly in foreign countries. But, films like this are still available. Watch 'em! :)

I look back on 1979's ALIEN fondly. I had tried to sit through JAWS in 1975 or 1976 and...well...it didn't work out. It ended badly. My friend's father had to sit out in the lobby with me watching the last 25 minutes through a small porthole in the door at the Novato theater. (The funny thing is that JAWS is now one of my favorite movies ever. Go figure.)

So, flash forward to 1979. I'm 10 years old. Another friend and I convince our mothers to take us to see ALIEN in an afternoon show. They cave to our begging and take us. This always brings a smile to my face. I WAS FRIGGIN 10 YEARS OLD and sat watching ALIEN like a CHAMP. I remember watching this film unfold like the titular Alien itself - staring at the screen and wondering what was going to happen next.

ALIEN had a realness to it. Things looked dirty and used. Really, everything in the film looks like it could exist. I love that. While STAR WARS was definitely mind blowing and amazing, it looked like fantasy while ALIEN looked like it was the future on celluloid. We loved it. No nightmares. No lobby time. Just sitting...watching...and LOVING this film to death.

Speaking of death...like I said...Dallas should have stayed THE HELL out of that shaft....

Inside: Second Mention

I think I've already covered the insanity and mayhem that is INSIDE, but with LIVIDE winging it's way to us, I figured it was worth a second mention.
INSIDE is a boneshaker. It rattles the soul. It slaps the face. It's so good.

My wife was 6 or 7 months pregnant when I saw this film and that made it very hard to watch. The subject matter and visuals are striking. The pack a punch that is just hard to shake. Here I am thinking about the film a long while after I saw it originally and it still makes me shiver when I think about some of the content and visuals.

Film makers Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury were being considered for a HELLRAISER reboot and I think it would have been amazing. Unfortunately, it seems that the studio has had second thoughts and have taken the offer back. I don't think they were ready to have something as intense as INSIDE for their reboot, but I think Hellraiser fans would have loved it.

Be afraid.

Film makers Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury bring us a dark fairytale that looks like it won't be as dark and nasty as INSIDE, but something that will be sure to do SOMETHING to disturb and entertain. These two men have a fantastic chemistry. The work they produce seems to be charged with creative and violent energy that makes their horrific efforts a joy to watch for horror genre fans. LIVIDE will make or break them in the horror realm. They only have this film and INSIDE under their belts, so if this hits as hard as INSIDE did, it will lock them into a course for French Horror Masters. Fingers crossed.

House of Frankenstein

This is another classic horror film from 1944. If you have not seen it, you really need to.

Universal studios brought together some great movie monsters to try to drive some traffic into the theater. What could be better than one monster in a movie? FIVE!

(Even if it's only REALLY three monsters...it's still cool!)

And you get Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney, Jr. , and John Carradine in the same film.

The one thing about this film that I could never get around is the odd looking Elena Verdugo. She always had a slightly goofy expression as I recall. However, this is a small price to pay for such a fantastic lineup! :)

I was just speaking to a friend about the Danny Elfman CD set MUSIC FOR A DARKENED THEATER and was revisiting some of the tracks when I saw NIGHTBREED listed.

I had forgotten about this strange, little 1990 movie gem. I remembered that I had liked it when it came out - an odd tale both written and directed by Clive Barker - but I didn't really remember much about it.

Through the wonders of the Intertubes® , you too can revisit NIGHTBREED. David Cronenberg as a bad guy, too. Can't go wrong there.

I've recently re-watched this movie.

I have to say, it's like a blanket - warm and comforting.

Now, I know what you're saying. "Really? The HORROR SHOW is backing Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Stockard Channing and Dianne West as witches doing love spells and things?!"

Well....yeah. Sandra Bullock is hot. :)

But, besides that, it has a dark side. Really dark. It also has some nice scenes and interesting direction by Griffin "After Hours" Dunne, who I really dig.

Looking for a little romantic comedy action with a little kick to it? Check it out. It's not bad.

Boys in Trouble Double

BOYS IN TROUBLE DOUBLE:
DORM & THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE

A perfect double feature for foreign movie fans, these two features are very similar, but different enough to make things interesting.

In DORM, a boy is sent to a boy's school and he has a hard time acclimating to the new surroundings. Of course, when a ghost singles you out, things can be rather tough as well. What is the mystery of the poor soul that haunts the school?

THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE has a similar feel. Director Guillermo del Toro brings his delicious style to the tale of a boys school during the Spanish Civil War (Part of the set of films del Toro helped get out into the world set in this time period - DEVIL'S BACKBONE, PAN'S LABYRINTH and THE ORPHANAGE. A must have set of DVDs!!) Times are hard and this home for boys is barely holding it together. The place is run with love by an older man and woman, however a dark younger man is filled with so much hate and rage that he is like a cancer that eats away at the soul of the home.
And...what of the home's dark secrets and frighteningly AWESOME child ghost that roams the halls at night?
Some of the coolest ghost effects I've seen.

All in all, this would make a fantastic double feature.

What a fun little spook movie this is! Creepy dolls, old house and things that go bump in the night? Oh yeah!

This is a nugget from 1987 with some simple, but effective special effects work. The concept is creepy for sure. Fun stop action effects and some cool camera play really make things pop.

Fans of WAXWORK and it's comedic horror flavor will love this film. Another goodie from Stuart Gordon. (Re-Animator, From Beyond, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids)

It's a lite and adorable flick that holds up pretty well.

When I started this list, I COMPLETELY forgot about the most nutty and evil crazy of 'em all - La Femme from INSIDE. ::::shiver:::::

Ideal for midnight viewing. Right when your brain is starting to go a little soft. So creepy. So spot on.

Darren Aronofsky harnesses the madness yet again in this creepy tale of darkness creeping in around the edges.

"Crazy. I'm crazy for feelin'...so lonely."
So very awesome. So very crazy. A personal fave.

Poor Carrie White.

And...some of these ladies are just crazy from the get go...like Annie.

Miike knows crazy. He made Queen Crazy.

Esther isn't well at all, either.

What happens when you break into the wrong mausoleum?

BATMAN (Adam West) also brightens the cast with his acting chops.

Elizabeth Daily - sex symbol gone cartoon voice talent and singer - appears as well. It's worth watching just for that! :)

And the acting. Oh....the acting. I love the 26 year old (being kind) high school students, too.

PART ONE

GOTHIC (1986)

Have you seen Ken Russell's movie GOTHIC?

If you have not, do so immediately.

If you have, maybe it's time to re-watch it?

The film is an amazing, visual treat that is filled with strange, nightmare visions and dramatic acting. It is a fictional document of Mary Shelly (Natasha Richardson) visiting Lord Byron (Gabriel Byrne) the night she comes up with FRANKENSTEIN. Julian Sands is in it as well and he's as over the top as usual. Myriam Cyr is also present in all her creepy-beauty glory.

This romantic, gothic tale is well worth a watch. The visuals stay swirling in your mind after you watch it like some sort of nightmare dream state. I have to say, I would love to spend a night like this somewhere! :)

Thriller

If you're like me, it's been a while since you've seen John Landis' video for Michael Jackson's THRILLER. Yes, John "BLUES BROTHERS•TWILIGHT ZONE•AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON•ANIMAL HOUSE" Landis.

Sadly, Mr. Landis was involved in a horrid accident during the shooting of his portion of THE TWILIGHT ZONE where Vic Morrow and two child extras were killed. He made some choices that lead to the accident and his career and name took a major hit. He's stayed active, but has not been on the course he would have been on.

And, Michael Jackson. Troubled mega-star. A life filled with drama and questions that had a sad and abrupt end.

But...before all that....there was THRILLER.

Man, I remember the premier of the video - on MTV way back when they played videos. That video was talked about all day. "Coming up in three hours! Two hours! ONE HOUR!" We were thrilled, that's for sure. The promise of fantastic effects work by Rick Baker had me drooling!

And when we saw the epic story unfold, we were taken on the wild ride we were promised.

Jackson as a werecat-man-thing. AWESOME!

Dancing around the cute girl when they leave the theater. AWESOME!

Then....BANG! ZOMBIES before zombies were in everything from horror movies to car commercials. And scary zombies that crawled out of graves. Fabulous!

AND THEN THEY ALL DANCE?!?!? HOLY CRAP!!!!!

This video holds up to this day.

Horror Remakes

I was just thinking about horror remakes on my drive in to work today while listening to the DEADPIT RADIO podcast and I wondered how many of these remakes actually make people happy. How many do critics stand up and cheer for? I thought that I was missing something that might explain how these movie remakes keep getting kicked out.

I checked METACRITIC and gathered some data on some of the remakes that have come out of late. Here's what they had.

Perfect score - 100/100
THE FOG - 27/100
FRIDAY THE 13th - 34/100
QUARANTINE ( [rec] remake ) - 53/100
HALLOWEEN - 47/100
HALLOWEEN II - 46/100
FRIGHT NIGHT - 64/100
NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET - 35/100

In some cases, the rate wasn't bad - FRIGHT NIGHT specifically. Honestly, a lot of the people that went to go see it probably were not even born when the original came out. And, I think that's where the studio mindset is. Cash in on a franchise that a whole generation may not have been aware of. However, it doesn't seem to be working. Why are they still doing it?

Quarantine was made in the same year the original film came out. The same year. Rotten Tomatoes gave [rec] 96% fresh and gave Quarantine 59%. However, the Quarantine 2 movie which happens to take the story off in a departure from [rec]2 came in at 83% fresh, at least at the time I'm writing this. Maybe coming up with an original concept here saved the film?

I've railed against remakes before and I'm sure no one is even going to read this, however it just amazes me that this format still gets green lit when original films still come out and have to struggle for a theatrical release.

2009's HOUSE OF THE DEVIL was an amazing film that blew me away. (86% Fresh on RT) It was an homage to films of the 70s and 80s - sure, but it was original.

TUCKER AND DALE v. EVIL (89% Fresh on RT) made me laugh so hard I thought I was going to toss my popcorn! However, it spent a long while floating through festivals and the like and is finally seeing the light of day this October in main theater venues.

But...SAW 39 pops into theaters without and issue.

Odd....odd stuff.

Samurai Princess

There is a new-ish style of Japanese movie that is all the rage. Well, some of the rage. The style is like classic "splatter" mixed with cyberpunk. Blood sprays, body parts fly and the absurd is perfectly acceptable. Films like MACHINE GIRL and TOKYO GORE POLICE do it really well. The action is nutty and the violence is SO over the top it become comical. Samurai Princess just misses the mark, starting out strong and grinding out to a crawl. It does wrap up well with a "Boss Battle", but it's all too late and too far between to make it as enjoyable as the two films listed above.

The film came out in 2009 and it's base plot is revenge. People are creating "MECHA" - a cyborg blend of flesh and machine. This is against the law and the cyborgs are hunted down and exterminated. Two crazy mecha's and their gang rape and kill a group of girls (randomly playing and frolicking by a stream...) and, with the help of a Buddhist nun (huh?) one of them comes back as a mecha with the souls of all the women in her to seek...revenge.
Sounds cool...a little.

But, this blood spraying, tongue wiggling and violence against women is just awkward and upsetting. For some reason, the things in this film never reach the level of "comic violence", so it just remains low brow violence with nothing much to add.

The dub is horrid, so unless you want to listen to the comically ridiculous NETFLIX dub, find this film online or on DVD.

There was a foot tossed at the nun at one point when she starts preaching and I had to laugh out loud, but that was it, really. I could not tell what time period is was supposed to be. When the hell is this supposed to be happening? They are like strange, harajuku people in some strange, alternate universe. The clothing is bizarre.

The film's star is Yû Aiba - Japanese porn star. But, don't get your nekkid meters revving - there's very little nekkidness in here.

I think you are better off sticking with MACHINE GIRL (Reviewed here) or TOKYO GORE POLICE over this movie. I LOVED MACHINE GIRL.

You can watch Samurai Princess here...until they yank it down! :) Just watch the first and last 10 or fifteen minutes and I think you're good.

VERSUS: Night of the Demons

A child of 80s horror, NIGHT OF THE DEMONS 1988 - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093624/ - was on my hit list for a LONG time. I revisited the movie often and was never disappointed.

Staring the 80s-awesome Linnea Quigley, this almost perfect 80s horror blast is rather standard plot-wise. Teens where they should not be. However, it's handled rather well. There's a small group that meet at a haunted house. All hell breaks loose when they decide to hold a séance. Why not hold a séance? The house is an old mortuary. It's perfect. One by one, the teenyboppers get dead and demoned, going from cuties to psycho killers. The human guests can't escape the demons because the whole house has a ring of underground spring that holds them in. Fantastic “bottle style” plot.

The visual effects are rather good for it's time. Hell, it's not bad for now, honestly, thanks to the wondrous Steve Johnson. (Linnea's former husband, by the way) The demons look like the demons from DEMONS and I love the look. The film is filled with guts and gore...and boobs...and gore boobs...so there's fun for all who love 'em both.

The story is simple, yet entertaining. There's a dark humor to the whole of the movie that is good for a giggle or more, yet it doesn't go slapstick or dumb. The writing is the thing that saves it and keeps the whole thing moving at a good clip and at a good pace.

The acting is not award winning – some of Jill Terashita's lines are almost painfully dragged out of her – however it works with the overall set up and production. It's a goof and some of the dialog is delivered as such. And, it is the 80's, after all.

Overall, I loved the film and still think it holds up as a genre film of it's time with a lot of kick.

Now....the remake.

2010's NOTD is not a gem, nugget or otherwise.

The plot is the same more or less. Substitute a stream with a wall – that's fine. Break a massive “booze and hot girls dancing to crap music” party up with a cop visit, then get the primaries back in the house through random acts – ok, fine. Add demons and gore– fantastic. But this movie has no soul. No kick.

We're dragged from point to point ( against our will ) by hot girls dressed as slutty cats and...a zombie, maybe? They bounce around the screen and exchange bad lines, then we finally move along...to a strip club...to meet...the kid from T2?! What?! Yeah! That's him..just fatter and less attractive in general. ANYWAY...yeah...he's in a strip club and he owes a BAD MAN money. He's bad and we know it. He's getting oral sex as he yells at T2 kid. He makes threats too....cause he's a BAD MAN.

Demons yet?

NO!

Off to the party house! Let's go!

Ok...now that we're on the set where the demons will attack...we can relax and listen to the slut cats and zombie girl babble some more. Find out that T2 kid is the ex-boyfriend of zombie girl. Find out that the party organizer is a bit of a tramp and that Slut Cat 01 better watch it or she'll nab her man. Do some dancing. Watch T2 kid sell drugs. See some more Slut Cat cleavage.

Yeah.....uh...

Wait...demons now?

NO! Here come the COPS! Yeah...they're gonna break that party up!

“Get out of here, Teens! You don't belong here.” Yeah.

Ok...bored yet? I know I was. Fast forward through all that unless you're a Slut Cat fan. Then...stop at those parts as you fast forward.

DEMONS! Yes!

Ok, the demons are kinda cool looking. Admittedly the only reason I tried this remake out. As a fan of the 88 version, I wasn't going to give this the time of day until I saw the red eyed demon girl. That got me into the idea. I thought that if they just remade this like the old one was with updated effects and the like, it'd be great. But, they added a bunch of filler and it completely kills the pace. While the demons looked grand, they are not able to keep this film afloat.

We watch as cool looking demons stalk the teenyboppers and chase them around, but I just didn't care. There was one added element that I found appealing, but they managed to botch that with a silly...sad little ending that did nothing more than piss me off.

So....the winner of this match is NIGHT OF THE DEMONS 1988!!!

MAIL ORDER ZOMBIE is a fun little podcast with some grand production quality and awesome content. The show's hosts - "Brother D" and "Miss Bren" - are a charming husband and wife team with a true love for each other and for horror. A winning combo for this podcast.

To mix things up a bit, they open the podcast up to reviews and comments from the M.O.Z. Family - listeners from around the globe with a similar love of the undead. This allows for a feeling of community and additional content.

There are times where the M.O.Z. Family's input rambles on a bit, but that is a small price to pay for the kind of energy this podcast creates.

The content flow moves from zombie news to reviews to a combo team up by D and Bren at the end of the show where they usually review a movie together. The podcast times range from an hour to two hours and are packed with good content and some highly entertaining reviews and discussions.

A must-listen for any zombie fan!

Scream Queen Great Linnea Quigley was married to F/X master Steve Johnson for a while - most likely part of the drive to make this goofy thing. :)

Work out with little Linnea and her zombie horde! Or, just sit back and have yourself a good giggle. It's silly, collector fun from the 1990s from an actress that wasn't known for her acting. She's a scream queen through and through and she's good at it. The gags are insane and the effects work is actually better than most zombie horror stuff from today. Good, "dirt style" zombies that look like they clawed their way up from the depths.

You could TRY to find this "gem" on eBay...or just watch a little of this NSFW beauty right here.

This is a lovely little creep-fest! Francis Ford Coppola's fifth film, DEMENTIA 13 has to be one of my favorite's. It's a gothic tale of greed, murder and madness set on the grounds of an old sprawling castle home. After the death of one of the Haloran siblings, the family gathers to mourn. That's when the fun really begins.

You can see Coppola style really coming to form in this film. His shots and set-ups are working their way to brilliance in the black and white horror classic. Is it THE GODFATHER? Oh....hahahaha....nooooo...no, it's not. But, it's a fantastic, bump-in-the-night thriller that sends a little shiver up my spine every time I see it. (Damn doll.....)

Jack Hill of SPIDER BABY fame was second unit writer on the film. Luana Anders and William Campbell turn in some grand performances and some of the visuals will definitely haunt you for a while afterward. Especially if you like swimming in the local pond...at night.

This film is perfect for a cold, winter night. Put it on, turn out the lights and snuggle up with the person...or blanket...you love. Keep them close to where you can see them!

Ingrid Pitt - R.I.P.

The fantastic Ingrid Pitt has passed on, sadly. (November 2010)

Hammer's Horror Lovely survived a concentration camp, believe it or not. She lived through the horror there and went on to star in several horror spectaculars like Countess Dracula, The Vampire Lovers and The House that Dripped Blood.

The delicious vixen was in several other films, of course, but I'll always remember her in the Hammer films. She wrecked me as a boy of 15. :)

When this came out, I gave it a BIG OLE PASS because I thought it was another TOURISTAS or SAW. I don't need to see another one of those ever again. But, thanks to NETFLIX, I gave this film another look when after I saw the trailer. And well...it's a messed up little flick! I liked it a lot.

A “let's go explore” film, true – this is a classic film where the people should NOT be going where they are going. When they get there, it's WAY too late.

What is it? It's FRIGGIN NASTY is what it is!!!

The story was well done, the acting is great and there are scenes that had me kicking my feet and cringing. It's not an Academy Award winner, sure, but it has enough bite to really put a damper on eating dinner during it, that's for sure. The effects are slipped in perfectly - a delightfully gruesome mixture of practical and computer generated nuggets that work with the story, not in place of it.

Make sure you check out the alternate ending on the DVD and let us know what you prefer - what was in the original cut or the alternate end. We'd love to hear!

I dare you to watch it. Go on. Do it.

I just listened this this and it had some really nice bits. Some of it was familiar like how Savini met Romero and why he does what he does, but some of it was new and very interesting.

Savini says that he might -as of the time of the Q&A - play the Governor in THE WALKING DEAD. GREAT casting if it's true. (Though Danny Trejo might be as well.)

And in other fun news, it looks like Savini and Romero are going to do a remake of CHILDREN SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS which might be fun as well. This film always gave me the creeps even though it's "no budget" fair from the 70's. There was something about the darkness of it and the sheer panic the characters go through. It might make a good little remake and I'm not sure Bob Clark would mind at this point. Bob Clark side note HERE

Short, sweet and to the point – I like this film, but it wasn't what I expected it to be. Perhaps it was a victim of over hype or a trailer that was cut...too well? If I went in cold to this film, I would have LOVED it. Honestly, I expected something a little more fear filled and scary. Instead, I got a solid, well acted film with a fun storyline and some awesome moments.
If you like foreign cinema and have a taste for the absurd, check this little nugget out. I'm sure you'll be entertained and amused.

Riots. Protests. These are starting to be commonplace news headlines in France. Have been for a long while now. I believe that this is being reflected in the horror coming out of France these days. INSIDE. MARTYRS. These were really amazing and really disturbing films. While THE HORDE doesn't quiet hit those particular heights of madness, it does manage to entertain and thrill.

A classic “Good Guys v. Bad Guys” film goes zombie. Pretty much all you need to know about the plot. The action starts rolling minutes into the film and just doesn't stop. The bonus materials show one of the films directors - Yannick Dahan, I believe – viewing the scene through a monitor and shouting direction to the actors in a somewhat manic way. He's excited and thrilled by what he's seeing. This energy translates directly to what shows up on screen.

The group that was assembled for this was very interesting. French cops, Nigerian drug lords and a tenant who lived through a war and brought a little of it back with him. A fun teaming. When the good and the bad are forced to team up to survive, the tension grows and ads another element to things that keeps things rolling towards doom.

The zombies in THE HORDE are a lot of fun. They are the undead ramped up to 11 – meaner, stronger and a sweet mix of 28 days later “infected” and Dawn of the Dead remake flesh eaters. (sans leaping about like gymnasts!) The sheer amount of them and the relentless drive they have to eat make for some uncomfortable moments. They look grand, though their sharp teeth were a tad distracting.

The interesting thing – I was more taken by the social side of things than the zombie action. This is a good thing. Zombie movies are popping up everywhere. People are getting blood tossed on 'em and being thrown in front of the camera ad nauseam. Having a good zombie film with great social undertones is a true win.

If you're looking for a fun zombie ride, pick this up ASAP.

Ok...don't get me wrong. Insanitarium isn't a great film. It's close to good, however. I mean, good in that B grade goodness that's awesome to eat popcorn to.

The long and the short - A man's sister slips into madness and is placed in an insane asylum. The man - the somewhat wooden Jesse Metcalfe - doesn't think she should be there and gets himself placed so he can bust her out.

A sound plan. :::sigh:::

Annnnnd...comedy ensues.

Madness abounds. Male and female crazies cavort. People do crazy things. You know the drill. But then things get to be a little fun. It seems the main doctor - the awesome Peter Stormare - seems to be up to some dirty deeds with the patients and those dirty deeds are creating some interesting results.

I'm not sure this is a full "zombie" movie, but it does have zombie-like tendencies a la 28 Days Later. People are doing a little nibbling and a lot of killing.

Olivia "Va Va Voom" Munn turns in the best performance of the whole film. She's really very good and I'd like to see her acting in other movies, not just dressing in skimpy clothing. She has a great sense of humor and, yes, she looks good in a bikini, but she's also able to hold her own on the acting front. I was taken aback.

So...if you're a Munn fan, a non-zombie zombie movie fan or a fan of asylum movies, give this one a shot. It's a fun little bloody romp through madness and goofy fun.
